Graece Ἀφέτρς, Praetor apud Romanos dictusest, quod signum daret in Circensibus emittendarum quadrigarum. A verbo ἀφιέναι, i. e. mittere, dimittere; unde Ἄφεσις, dimissio: Ἀφετηρία, in Circo, idem quod ὕςπληγξ, quô nomine indigitantur carceres et repagula, quibus remotis ac laxatis equi prosiliebant. Quorum carcerum fores quod cancellatae ellent et reticulatô opere factae, hinc ἀφετηρίαν Tzetzes interpretatur κάγκελλον, Latini quoque Transenam, de qua voce infra. Sed et in stadio ἀφετηρία seu ὕςπ ληγξfuit. Et quidem in Stadio ὕςπ ληγξ repagulum erat sive regula linea, quae laxabatur et aperiebatur exituris in stadium cursoribus: in Circo ὕςπληγτες, carcerum repagula vocabantur, quibus laxatis equi emittebantur. Certe in Stadio primitus visi ἀφετήριοι Ἕρμαι, duo illi Hermulae, qui utrinque exstantes fune demislô repagulum solvebant, inventore Tlepolemô Myrensi, uti infra pluribus dicemus.
